Peony Root
Peony is a flower that has symbolized wealth, honor, love, and feminine beauty since ancient times. Paeonia suffruticosa originated from China, also known as a tree peony, and belongs to the peony family. Paeonia is derived from the name Greek mythology, where Paean was a disciple of the god of medicine.
Paeonia suffruticosa has been used for medicinal purposes in China for more than 2000 years and has a long history of use within traditional oriental medicine. The peony root used for medicinal purposes is called Cortex Moutan (Mu Dan Pi).
Cortex Moutan’s main traditional application and efficacy included clearing heat, cooling blood, clearing fire from deficiency, clearing ascending liver fire and invigorating the blood. Studies on Cortex Moutan for the skin suggests it is a therapeutic agent for skin lightening and exhibits a fat solubility that allows it to be absorbed into the skin for better moisturizing. There are over a dozen biologically active substances found in Cortex Moutan and is known to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.
